Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa

The Subclass 491 visa is a five-year provisional points-tested visa for skilled workers nominated by an Australian state or territory or sponsored by an eligible regional family member. Holders must live, work, and study only in a designated regional area. After three years of meeting the regional requirement and an income threshold, holders can apply for permanent residency through the Subclass 191 visa.

    The SkillSelect program year 2026-27 opened on 1 July 2026. The Department of Home Affairs typically issues the first invitation round of the new financial year in early-to-mid July. The June 2026 round (4 June) issued 10,000 invitations under Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent) with no minimum points cutoff applied. Candidates with high points scores or who are in occupations with persistent demand should ensure their EOI is in submitted status and points-claimed correctly before the next round is drawn.
